What’s Up Outdoors: A beautiful day for bluegills

Things around the state are finally opening up, but if you have been on the lakes you wouldn’t have known anything was closed.

I definitely have never seen so many people using all the outdoors has to offer. From fishing, kayaking and hiking, it all seems like the thing to do right now. As for me, I’ll stick to the boat, or anything with a motor really. This year has been anything but normal but people are trying to make the best of it by getting lost in the outdoors, I know it helps me.

So speaking of fishing, we decided to take last Saturday to just go out on a friend’s pontoon and relax and catch a few fish. And I guess the day was just going too well and something had to give. We all caught dozens of bluegills and many were over the 10-inch mark. A few were over 11 and a couple even bigger.

The sun was shining and we didn’t have to battle any wind or bugs. And then as I was taking the paint out of a jig eye with another hook I only had to say two words, “urgent care.” It’s crazy how many tournaments I’ve fished in huge waves with treble hooks flying everywhere I’ve only had a couple of hooks I couldn’t remove myself.

But somehow on this beautiful day, I managed to bury one right behind my fingernail and didn’t think it would be wise to try to get it out. It really was pretty painless, but I still think the doctor should’ve given me a cool fish sticker for being a big boy and not crying. I mean, is that too much to ask for?
