It's hard to believe Labor Day is over and we will getting ready for hunting season already. The Bear hunters have been having some luck thanks to the acorns holding off and most of the archery hunters that are getting their stands up aren't seeing much for sign. This weekend early Goose season starts and from there every weekend opens a new season, at least that's what it feels like.

Also, with the wet and cool summer, there is a bumper crop of mushrooms, especially Chicken of the Woods. Now all you have to do is figure out how you want to spend your fall - late season walleye or musky fishing or goose, grouse, deer or mushroom hunting. I hope you have an easier time deciding than me.

As far as my relationship with the Mississippi goes, it's getting better. On Labor Day I was invited to go on the lower part of the river on a fishing trip on some friend's pontoon. Yes, a pontoon.

We were definitely the only ones out there. The trip started by catching some nice smallies with a walleye and some northerns mixed in. And then it was on to a new experience to me, catfish fishing. It was absolutely a blast, one after another and with the current near the dam they were a battle. I was lucky enough to catch the first one, and actually it was my first one ever. I was kind of leery on taking a pontoon out on the river but it was an awesome way to experience it. Plus there aren't too many places you can catch fish and stop at Dairy Queen at the same time.
