What's Up Outdoors: Even in crazy times fishing is still essential

Maybe a couple weeks remain of ice fishing, but open water will be here soon

Thankfully in this crazy time we are in, fishing is “essential.” For most of us, late season fishing already was.

As of right now it’s looking like we should have a week or two left to chase panfish as long as the ice holds up the way it has been. We have been hitting many different lakes to learn some new water and the bite has been getting better every day.

Hopefully turkey hunting gets here quickly so we will have another activity to get outside and enjoy. As of now all public access to the Rainy River is closed, and with the pounding the walleyes got this winter on Lake of the Woods that might not be such a bad thing. You can still access the river through private accesses, but those are few and far between.

I’ll be spending this weekend chasing trout one last time and trying to find some monster crappies before we call it quits. And on a positive note, this might be the year where you actually have all your fishing reels spooled with new line before the opener gets here.

Don’t worry people, open water will be here soon!
