Last week I was lucky enough to guide on Mille Lacs for the Trolling for the Troops event held at Camp Ripley. The event started on Thursday afternoon at camp where we got to meet our veteran anglers and have dinner where we got to see old friends and meet some new ones. Some of the guides go to the Mississippi River in search of smallmouth bass and we would be hitting the waters of the big pond.
One of the guys in my boat was Curt Zacharius a veteran who I got to fish with in my recent adventure in Ely. The other was Dave Munsinger from Osage. All the talk the night before was about the weather coming in and what spots were going to be "fishable" in the wind. We decided to chance it and after a quick stop at Tutts Bait, were on our way to Myr-Mar to chase some walleyes and smallies. And let me tell you, I don't know why you can't keep any walleyes because to say that the lake is on fire is an understatement. We drifted the rock reef using an assortment of jigs and bobber rods with leeches and it didn't seem to matter the presentation they would bite. We filled the day with doubles and triples of huge fat smallmouth and tons of eater to picture fish walleyes.
Rolling in the waves one of the guys got a little sea sick but he was able to keep busy setting the hook so he got over it. At the end of the day we were a little wet, a little wobbly, and our hands were a little cut up from taking off so many fish. And we wouldn't have had it any other way.
