What's Up Outdoors: Fishing the mother of them all -- Lake of the Woods

Quite a change this week in fishing. We went from a very small lake to the mother of them all.

Tammy and I traveled to Lake of the Woods to get out of town for a couple of days, and also to catch some fish. Friday night we met up with some friends from Brainerd to do a little sturgeon fishing. Being Tammy hadn’t caught one yet it wouldn’t take long to check that species off her list. We boated nine in a few hours but nothing big. My buddy Josh’s boat, on the other hand, caught a 63-inch monster and a few others. Being they had never targeted sturgeon either, it was a pretty exciting first night.

Saturday would bring us out to the big lake for some walleye action. Starting with jigs we caught a couple. Switching over to crankbaits was very uneventful. Finally we put on spinners and got on a consistent bite. The only problem was as the bite was heating up so was the wind. And as usual I just had to stay out a little too long. With some cautious driving we made it through the gap and back in safely, but a 20-foot boat has never felt so small to me.

Fishing that day was followed by grilling elk burgers with some friends from Baudette. And on the last day the fish didn’t really cooperate so we headed home already planning when we can go back, hopefully on a calmer weekend.

One last thing -- next Sunday, Aug. 4, is the Super Hero Fishing Rod Tournament at Lum Park in Brainerd. Registration is online at Confidence Learning Center, https://www.campconfidence.com/super-hero-fishing-rod-tournament , or be there at 6:45 a.m. Hope to see you there!
