Although most of the big fish seasons are closed, and many anglers will resort to fishing for panfish, you still have some choices.

We are lucky enough to be close to border waters such as Lake of the Woods, which is open for walleye and pike for a while. You also can make the trip to the Dakotas for some jumbo perch.

And then there is Canada, where your chance at trophy lake trout, pike and walleyes aren't as tough as you would think. The Kenora and Nestor Falls area of Ontario have literally tons of great lakes. And if you aren't up for traveling, we still have trout season and some pretty good lakes off the beaten path. That's what I've been targeting because I love smoked fish, and the way they hit your lure and the fight they give is amazing for their size.

Winter is coming to an end so make the most of the last ice season.
