What's Up Outdoors: Friends take part in ice fishing jackpot

Last weekend we decided to have a weekend that was not just about ice fishing.

Me and the guys made a trip to my cabin, the adventure would include a little snowmobiling and a little ice fishing. OK, we were just snowmobiling into the fishing lakes. And with the snow being a little too deep, we even had to ride sleds into the cabin.

The first night we hit one of the old spots I used to fish probably 30 years ago. Surprisingly on the second hole drilled we found schools of crappies, bass and bluegills that were all hungry. Within a few hours we were well on our way to a fish fry. The next morning the thermometer told us to wait until sunrise to head out on the sleds for the 10 mile ride to a back in the woods trout lake, so that's what we did. We decided on fishing a 20-foot shelf hoping the rainbows would be traveling through. And lucky enough, we hit another jackpot. It wasn't a limit-out day but we all kept a few to smoke and threw back a bunch of smaller fish.

It took a while to figure out what they wanted but soon enough we all had smaller gold spoons tied on and were getting bit. And with plenty of trout in our buckets we headed back to catch a few more panfish and even caught a few pike. The snowmobile trip back to the cabin was soon followed by hungry fisherman covering the kitchen table with newspaper soon to be covered with the day's catch.

There couldn't of been a better ending to the day than the wood stove roaring in the background and the frying pans filled with fillets and potatoes. It was one of those trips that will be remembered for being much more than just fishing, a truly great weekend with friends.
