The fish bit, for some anglers. The weather was decent and everyone had a good time. OK, some people had too good of a time.

The kick-off party at Grand View Lodge was awesome as always. On the ice, working for Strikemaster, I got the pleasure of meeting some diehard fisherman that drove all the way from New York.

But the thing that stood out the most was the leaderboard. Most years there are a mixture of species from big to small, and usually quite a few walleyes.

Last year there was a bunch of walleyes, more than I had ever seen. But this year, they were pretty much nonexistent and tullibee filled over 130 spots out of 150. That is also something I have never seen. I bet next year you will see a bunch more fisherman in the deeper water fishing for them.

After all the excitement on Gull Lake was over, I made it to the Fear the Spear GTG that was held near Mille Lacs Lake.

Over 200 pike spearers from young to old gathered after a day of staring down waiting for that monster to swim in. This event grew to double its size in only one year and I can't wait to see what next year brings. After the fish were weighed in and filleted, there was a great fish fry to follow.

There were awards for biggest and smallest pike and of course an ugly fish award.

If you like to spear or even if you haven't done it since you were a kid, this is a great event with some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

Any question or thoughts on making your own spear or decoy, or advice in any techniques, they are always very helpful on giving a newbie advice.

Speaking of spearing, I'm off to Lake Winnebago next week to try my luck again sturgeon spearing.

Wish me luck.
