For me this winter seems like the winter that never was. We were very late getting ice, and the lakes never made that much. Now we are in melt mode with record warm temps. It looks like this might be our last week for ice fishing except for northern Minnesota.

The good news is it's time to get the boat out and ready for the Rainy River. Reports last week were some open water and a few small boats out. And with no snow to melt, the water should stay pretty clear.

So if you have never made the trip, this might be your year to do it. Whether you want to chase sturgeon or walleyes it should be a good one. Since we have a little time, be sure to get your boat motor tuned up. There is always someone whose trip is ruined by not making sure everything is working before they make the voyage. And then there is "that guy" who decides to work on their boat at the dock while hundred of anglers wait in line. That is not any way to make friends. See you on the open water.
