Just because the wheel houses are coming off the lakes doesn’t mean the ice is.
We have plenty of winter yet and it might be the time to chase the fish that are still in season. Panfish, trout, perch and catfish are all open and for many species the bite is just getting better. The Horseshoe Chain in Richmond for catfish is always a good time, but it is a river system so use caution on where you travel on the ice. Another fun trip is Leech Lake for perch. Shallow flats have already started producing some big fish. Give Trappers Landing a call for the latest updates.
And if you still have the itch to chase walleyes and pike there is no better place than Lake of the Woods this time of year. Soon the big pike bite will be heating up.
As for me I’m counting the days until the Rainy River so we can go hook up with some sturgeon. But until then you might as well take advantage of the ice -- and the fact that the mosquitoes aren’t bad yet.
