As the rest of the anglers in Minnesota are still waiting for the walleye opener, we are giving it our all and getting some great rewards on the last days of the walleye season on the Rainy River.
Settling in at River Bend's Resort, we are getting spoiled having the river full of fish only a few feet in front of our cabin. The fishing has been nothing short of great, with plenty of eater walleyes and some really fat picture fish. The action is making it hard to switch gears to sturgeon. But sturgeon is next on our list since we only have one more day on the river.
From Four Mile to the Birchdale access, the fish seem to be everywhere. All you need to figure out is what they want. From bait decisions like frozen shiners or rainbows, and jig colors and sizes, every day seems to be different. Over the next month, the sturgeon bite will continue to get better and with it being a relatively new sport, resorts like River Bend's and Walleye Inn are doing guided trips this spring, so they are making it pretty easy for people to come up and get in on the action. Along with myself and Bret Amundson from Northland Outdoors, we were joined on the trip by Joe Henry from Lake of the Woods Tourism so we got to learn a lot about the Lake of the Woods community that most people do not get to experience, like listening to a player piano at the museum and learning about the fishing history in the area. So it has been another trip for the memory book.
