What’s Up Outdoors: See you at the Extravaganza

It’s official: Mother Nature has given the Brainerd Jaycees enough ice, just in time.

But let’s face it, most every year they pull it off no matter what the season starts off like. And that’s a good thing, not just for thousands of anglers looking to get on the board but also for the many area nonprofit groups that benefit from all the volunteers and fisherman that make the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza the biggest event on the ice.

It’s always neat to see people from far away places step on the ice for the first time, sometimes it takes a bit to realize they are walking on water. And others have been coming year after year and wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Once again I’ll be on the ice with the Strikemaster crew and Tammy will be braving the elements hoping to finally put a fish on the ice. And as far as ice most lakes are shaping up nicely but I did get a few reports this week of very bad ice near areas with bog and swamp. It’s hard to believe but it’s late January and there are still soft spots, so be careful out there.

Hope to see you at the extravaganza, and don’t forget to stop by S&W Bait in the morning and get your lucky minnows.
