What's Up Outdoors: Trip of a lifetime to Tazin Lake

What an amazing week at Tazin Lake Lodge. In some ways it's hard to believe you are miles from no one, lacking the ability to use a computer. But when you see the miles of mountainous terrain and untouched water, you feel pretty small.

What an amazing week at Tazin Lake Lodge. In some ways it's hard to believe you are miles from no one, lacking the ability to use a computer. But when you see the miles of mountainous terrain and untouched water, you feel pretty small.

After a few different plane rides-last being a float plane-we arrived the morning of July 1 to be greeted by the owners and staff of this gem of a lodge in northwest Saskatchewan. Immediately getting in our cabin and off in a boat with our guide, Trevor Montgomery, we were eager to get our lines wet in this fishery known for world record fishing. After getting rigged for lake trout we were surprised to have two lakers in the boat within the first half hour, both over 40 inches. Not too much later and I would have my trophy laker, a 46-inch-long fish with a massive girth of 28 inches. Keep in mind the provincial record is 52 inches. No where else are you going to find fish with shoulders like these-mine was touching the 50 pound mark. I have caught lake trout around home but nothing will ever compare to this. Now I guess I will be on the search for a replica for the wall, unless I get lucky enough to beat my personal best yet this week.

I have so much more to tell you about this place and our fishing adventures here, like the monster pike we caught and the 5-star meals that we were pampered with. So next week you will have the rest of the story. For me it's time to get back in the boat and chase that record, eh.
