Even though the reports from the Rainy River walleye fishermen were not good last week, the weather looked promising, so Larry Stromback and I decided to make the trip. As soon as Easter dinner was over, we hit the road excited to put the boat in for the first time of the year. I was glad we had some hand warmers as the cold wind made for a chilly start.

It didn't take long for the first reel to start screaming with a hooked up sturgeon. Boats were staggered over every hole where anglers thought fish would be swimming. It looked like we found our lucky spot. By noon we had boated a dozen or so fish.

At noon, we headed to the landing to pick up Erik Osberg and his son "Walleye Willie" from the Outdoor Report to get Willie his first sturgeon.

Within a minute or two he had one on and was cranking it into the boat. Over the next few hours he got to catch quite a few fish, no trophies, but good battles none the less. Even though it was a relatively short trip, we boated 30 some sturgeon, the biggest being Larry's 58-incher. Hopefully this week when we go back, the walleye bite will be a little better, but if we have to fish sturgeon that's OK too.
