ST. PAUL-With one event in the books, the College of Saint Benedict track and field team already has one MIAC champion.

Sophomore Jenna Degen of Brainerd scored 3,330 points to win the pentathlon Thursday to give CSB a 10-point head start on the competition when the individual and relay events began Friday.

Degen's score was good enough not only for the MIAC title. It was also the CSB pentathlon school record, and as of Thursday it was the fourth-best point total in NCAA Division III.

Degen won the high jump and long jump. Her long jump mark of 5.29 meters is tied for fourth in school history, and her high jump mark of 1.58 meters is just shy of her personal best.

She also finished second in the 800 at 2:35.16 and third in the 60 hurdles at 9.37 seconds-the seventh-fastest time in school history. Degen took fifth in shot put with a mark of 9.76 meters.
