LAS VEGAS-Hayden Zillmer captured the best finish for the state of Minnesota on the senior level on the second day of the U.S. Open as eight Minnesota wrestlers tried to make the next step in qualifying for the 2018 U.S. World Team Trials next month.

The Crosby-Ironton High School graduate finished second after falling in the finals to J'den Cox, a world bronze medalist.

Zillmer made quick work of his first three opponents, outscoring them 33-2. He will likely be one of the top contenders at the World Team Trials.

The U.S. World Team Trials will be in Rochester Minn. starting May 18. Between Greco-Roman, Junior Freestyle and Senior Freestyle, Minnesota will have 16 representatives from its contingent of 21 that wrestled in Las Vegas.

Baseball: Fredrickson throws gem in Gophers' win

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 21 Minnesota Gopher baseball team survived a pitcher's duel with a ninth-inning run to defeat Ohio State 2-1 at Bill Davis Stadium on Saturday and claim a seventh-straight series victory.

The Gophers' Patrick Fredrickson and the Buckeyes' Ryan Feltner dueled through seven innings before Ohio State (27-13, 8-6 Big Ten) made the first move to the bullpen. Fredrickson (6-0) struck out seven in 8.0 innings while scattering eight hits on the day. Feltner left after allowing eight Minnesota hits, two walks, and one unearned run in 7.0 innings while striking out nine.
Minnesota and Ohio State were scheduled to conclude the series Sunday, April 29, afternoon in Columbus.

Softball: HRs lead Minnesota past Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Five hits and five home runs aided a perfect start for the Minnesota Gophers as they collected their fourth-consecutive conference sweep Sunday.th all nine starters reaching base, Minnesota (32-14, 15-3 Big Ten) recorded its fourth-straight shutout defeating Purdue (13-39, 4-15 Big Ten) in the series finale, 7-0.
Minnesota closes the regular season with a five-game home stand at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium. The Gophers host North Dakota State for a non-conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, before welcoming Penn State for a Big Ten three-game series May 4-6.
