Wrestling: Busbey, Warriors finish off Rocori on senior night
Denny Busbey was one of the few lucky ones.
On senior night Monday, Feb. 11, at Brainerd High School, Busbey was one of the few seniors who got to wrestle.
Busbey scored a 7-2 victory over Luke Hemmesch to give Brainerd a 12-9 edge and the Warriors cruised to a 48-21 Central Lakes Conference victory over the Rocori Spartans.
Busbey posted a quick takedown and never trailed in the match.
"I didn't have a gameplan," Busbey said. "I just went out there and battled, I guess. I knew I had him in the beginning.
"I wanted to pin him quick, but this is my last match here so I had to make it last a little bit."

Junior Cade Barrett didn't let his match last long as the junior scored a 23-second pin for the final score.
Four Warrior senior captains all picked up wins, but none of them got to see action as they all won by forfeit.
"Sometimes that's a struggle when you know that you have a match or a game that you should win," Brainerd head coach Mikkey White said. "The motivation tonight, honestly, was the forfeits. It was too bad that we had guys who didn't get to wrestle. I just told the guys that if you do get to wrestle, take advantage of it. We had four captains that didn't get a match. That was it right there."
The forfeits started after Busbey's victory. Kyle Patnode was followed by Brad Patnode and Braden Kramer for three straight forfeit victories and a 30-9 lead.
Caleb Kramer then added a 1:48 pin to push Brainerd's lead to 36-9.
The Spartans earned back-to-back pins to close the gap at 36-21, but Morgan Gibson collected the fourth forfeit win and Barrett's pin closed the match.
"I think we're on the right track for what we need to do on Saturday in the section tournament," White said. "The good thing is we have four days. We saw some things out there that we can work on. I'd rather see that here than on Saturday.
"Willmar got the No. 1 seed. Bemidji is No. 2 and we're the three seed. We split with Bemidji so we feel pretty confident there. It's just whoever is best on that day."
Brainerd's Tommy Daniels was better than his 106-pound opponent Monday as he posted a 2-0 win. Cole Ostrowski added a 3:52 pin at 120 to give Brainerd a 9-3 edge early.
Rocori tied it before Busbey scored the game-winning points.
"That feels good," Busbey said. "It feels really good. I'm saddened, too, I guess because this is my last one."
