During a snow emergency, Brainerd residents are mandated to keep vehicles off north-south streets one day and east-west streets the next—often the lesser-used, problematic routes, Sandy noted. The snow emergency provides an opening for plows to make a comprehensive, even sweep of the city—clearing recent snowfall and smoothing the persistent ice formations beneath. When a snow emergency is declared, it triggers a 48-hour ban for parking on snow emergency routes—of which, City Engineer Paul Sandy said, there will be no warnings given, drivers will ticketed and foot the bill if their vehicle is towed. This provides city staff enough time to plow and scrape streets and spread salt and chemicals on the streets. BrainerdDispatch.com Illustration
