20 years ago (1999)

Brainerd’s big, white, castle-like water tower is a landmark for tourists and something natives drive by nearly every day. Not everyone realizes that George Bedard, 89, led a dedicated group several years ago to save it from demolition. The former mayor was recently honored at a special lunch.

30 years ago (1989)

They came to Brainerd to relive old memories and create some new ones. Former members of Sharon Rogers All-Girl Orchestra gathered at Jeanne Knudsen’s for a reunion. The band toured from 1942 to 1947, including playing a USO tour in the Far East when their plane crashed.

40 years ago (1979)

Ron Stolski, Brainerd high school AD and football coach, has been picked to help direct the North offense in this year’s Minn. High School Football All-Star Game. Participants locally are Rick Hansen, Brainerd; Mark Selisker, C-I; and Roger Kline, Pine River.

60 years ago (1959)

Open pit mines near Crosby that throbbed to the roar of heavy truck engines and power shovels went silent at midnight last night when the national steelworkers strike took effect. The 600 local workers slept late, then came downtown to ask the question on all minds, “How long will it last?”

80 years ago (1939)

(Adv.) “Cliff” Leary (Special Deputy Sheriff) announces the formation of the Leary Protective Agency. A detective service for resorts, lake homes, homes and business. Seven years experience with Duluth Police; four years with Minn. Crime Bureau. Office between Gull and Round Lakes.

100 years ago (1919)

The contract to build the new school in West Brainerd has been let to John Jackson in the amount of $5,275. It will be one-room with full basement, and capable of being enlarged. It will have a small library. The school will be located on high ground about two blocks from the wagon bridge.
