20 years ago (1999)

It was a football game for a half. The 7th-seeded Duluth East Greyhounds trailed the No. 2 Warriors just 14-0 at halftime. Then Brainerd scored four straight touchdowns enroute to a 46-7 playoff win, and raised its season record to 8-1 as it moves into the semis against Moorhead.

30 years ago (1989)

Three years ago, a few people noticed when Brainerd's Turena Johnson took 6th in the Region 8AA cross country meet. Last year she finished 2nd in the region and 10th at state. This year she was the first Warrior girl to win the region, in 12:10, and is ranked 1st in the state coaches poll.


40 years ago (1979)

Internationally known writer and feminist Gloria Steinem received a standing ovation both before and after her speech to 200 people at the Brainerd Country Club. When asked how her tour of rural communities was going, she said, “Terrific. I've never done this before.”

60 years ago (1959)

A crowd of about 75 people, many of them openly hostile to the school board's proposed $470,000 building expansion plan, attended last night's meeting. A poll of the crowd showed 17 in favor and 56 against. The vast majority said they want a public vote.

80 years ago (1939)

An attempt to put lights on the ski slide at Boom Lake is being made by the Brainerd Ski Club, which will make a presentation to the water and light board. If lights are installed, ski jumping and night slalom could be enjoyed.

100 years ago (1919)

Brainerd, which years ago lost its large sawmill and had a period of adjusting to economic conditions, has a feeling for Little Falls which just closed its sawmill. The mill, owned by the Weyerhausers and Mussers, started in 1891 and sawed its last log at 10 a.m. yesterday.
