It may have taken 120 years, but Brainerd broke the high temperature record for June 8.

The temperature spiked to 95 degrees just before 3 p.m. Monday at the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport, breaking the record of 92 set on the date in 1900. A second record — set just last year — was also broken. The temperature never dipped below 74 degrees overnight, breaking the highest minimum temperature record set at 70 degrees in 2019. Brainerd just missed the high temperature record June 8, 2019, when it reached 90 degrees.

The morning started out hot at 77 degrees just before 8 a.m. and lingered in the mid- to upper 80s before hitting 90 degrees just before 2 p.m. Then within the hour, the temperature rose again, breaking the record. With the heat index, it felt like 99 degrees.

The normal high for June 8, according to the weather service, is 75 degrees, with a normal low of 51 degrees. The record low recorded on this date came in 1978, when the temperature dropped to 32 degrees.

After Monday, Brainerd folks may not see sunny skies until Thursday, as severe thunderstorms are expected over the next few days.

The National Weather Service in Duluth issued a hazardous weather outlook Monday for portions of northeast Minnesota, including Crow Wing, Cass, Aitkin, Morrison, Todd, Mille Lacs and Wadena counties.

“There is a slight chance of strong to severe storms west of line from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to northern Lake Mille Lacs,” the weather service stated. “Large hail and damaging winds are the main hazards.”

In Brainerd, the south wind Monday stayed in the upper teens, with gusts reaching 30 mph in the later afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms were likely mainly after midnight, with a 70% chance of precipitation.

A look ahead

In the Brainerd lakes area, thunderstorms are likely through Wednesday, with a slight chance Thursday.

Expect breezy conditions to continue this week. The high temperature Monday should lead into a week with cooler temperatures. Tuesday’s high may be about 80 degrees, but expected highs for the rest of the week are in the mid- to upper 60s, below the normal high of 75 degrees. Into the coming weekend, temperatures are expected in the low 70s.

Thunderstorms are likely for most of northeast Minnesota Tuesday and Wednesday, with chances diminishing for Thursday into Friday.

In the Brainerd area, there was a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, with a high near 80. The wind was expected to die down to 5-10 mph in the morning. By Tuesday night, the temperature was expected to drop to a low around 53 degrees. The chance of precipitation Tuesday night was 80%.

On Wednesday, storms and thunderstorms are likely, with a 70% chance of precipitation. The weather service reports Wednesday may be breezy with a northwest wind of 15-20 mph, with gusts up to a high of 25 mph.

Sunny skies are expected to return for the weekend.
